This year's U.S. Chess Championship was played in March. The overall champ is Alexander Onischuk, and the women's champion is Anna Zatonskih. This is sponsored in large part, by America's Foundation for Chess. They have developed a classroom chess curriculum that second and third grade teachers can teach on their own.

The Minnesota State Chess Association is the governing body for chess played in Minnesota. I just recently completed my one year term as President. The MSCA sponsors and runs seven major tournaments throughout the year. Two of my favorite events are the Minnesota Open and the Twin Cities Chess League, although all of them are great events.

The US Chess League, organized by Greg Shahade, is composed of 10 teams throughout the U.S. and played over the Internet Chess Club server. The San Francisco Mechanics bested the New York Knights in the season finale on Wednesday, November 29.

Jeremy Silman I highly recommend Jeremy's books, especially Reassess Your Chess. He examines chess as a series of different imbalances around which each player should be creating strategies.
