Joe Erjavec: "Teaching Chess in the Classroom"

Experience

I am a chess enthusiast who has been teaching chess to elementary school children since 2001. I began by volunteering at the Downtown Open School in Minneapolis, working with a handful of fourth and fifth graders during the school day.

In the spring of 2002, I received an interesting postcard from an organization called the HB Foundation which encouraged and rewarded excellence in school age chess. I contacted the Executive Director, Brian Molohon, and shortly thereafter I became a member of his advisory board. I helped the foundation in several roles, including Interim Director, over the last three years.

In the 2005-06 school year, I expanded my outreach by teaching three in-school and after-school programs. I taught nearly 200 students in the Twin Cities area.

I have been an active member in the U.S. Chess Federation for many years. I currently am a hard working class D player striving to get better every time I play. I find it critical to be an active player in order to bring ideas from the games I play to the students I teach.

Other than teaching chess, I am a promoter of chess through being a chess blog publisher, and the tournament director for Metro area chess tournaments.
